Welcome To The Palace Of Glittering Delights

Postby Rob » Sat Oct 23, 2004 11:54 am

This is the CoT, self-validated bastard offspring from the old Penny Arcade forums. And much, much more besides.

If this is your first time here, or you have no idea what the hell is going on (the two aren't mutually exclusive conditions), then let me try and help. I'm Rob (or Robsoft if you're a Bag of Ass), and I host this little den of gentle animosity for a bunch of n'er-do-wells spread, thankfully, all around the world.

They (for there are several of them, though they are not legion, unfortunately) - they come here for a chat. A nice sit down, maybe a cup of tea, some biscuits, a small amount of harmless banter (I believe the Americans call this "kidding around", something which has darker connotations in these days of pop-star paedophilia). Most of this chat takes place right in here, yes, this very room, CoT Central.

Occasionally a serious conversation (or a silly conversation on a serious subject) might break out. This is encouraged, although we tend to shepherd such things over to the Ministry Of Truth. Sometimes, people get angry. When this happens, we guide them gently, with calming and coaxing verbage, to the Pit Of Hate.

Once in a while, someone will feel all creative, and instead of searching for 'blowjob13.jpg' on google and grabbing a gym sock, they'll actually make something. You know, maybe a photograph. Or a poem. Or a level for a game. Or a short movie. Or a novel. Or a song. Whatever. When this happens, we guide them (with joy in our hearts) to the Department Of Public Works (note, there is an L in Public, okay?)

Or course, every now and then the world collapses. Or at least, our world. Servers die, people get their account locked up, or the moderators have to slap some silly bastard a few times. When this happens, first-hand reportage is dispatched to the Feedback forum.

Finally, from time to time we note that someone has started a particularly satisfying (or long) topic, and we either want to keep it for posterity, or it has become a pain to navigate/'serve' etc. In these dark moments, I grab my admin hat and move said posts to The Vault.

You are more than welcome, you are in fact positively encouraged to sign up and join in. We don't bite, the long tedious topics can be ignored if you so wish (it may actually enhance your browsing pleasure if you just forget about those topics altogether) and we have a sufficiently broad spectrum of people here that, even if you want to discuss say, the finer points of making sex toys from bits of Lego, you'll find people here that have either done just that (and proudly wear the t-shirt) or were thinking of doing it in the near future.

We have a few rules... nothing outrageous, basically don't post pornography, porn links or racial slurs. If you're going to link to an external image that might be considered "work unsafe" then please warn our little community - many of us surf from our places of work because that's the kind of dedicated, conscientious loyal company servants we are. We are a truly global board and just because your office hours are over, doesn't mean that everyone else is at home too. Okay?

Your moderator team (and I use both the words moderator and team advisedly) comprises of Bag of Ass, Pablo Banquo and SporkAndrew. These are the "big boys" to run to if someone pushes you over in the playground. From time to time I will intervene if something happens that needs my attention, but usually the surface of the pond is quite still, and the furtive activity below stays where it belongs.

Well, this has been much too long to eat at once (as my favourite whore said to me only last night) so I'll leave it there (as I replied).

Cheers, and welcome (etc).

A couple of other things to draw to your attention, if I may be so bold;

  • As a rule we didn't used to do "hi I'm new" topics. In fact, we discouraged them. However, if you do a "hi I'm new" topic and manage to inject a degree of humour, insight, creativity or thoughtfulness into it, not only will I allow it to stand, but we'll probably all love you and want to have your babies. Bear this in mind..
"Noob" posts ought to be kept to a respectful minimum and I think we'll have them in here (CoT Central) from now on, okay? Keeps the place a little more, you know, cosy and vibrant?
  • There are some nifty options on your profile page that might make your surfing life here easier. You can turn off seeing people's signatures and avatars, for instance. Normally we discourage OTT graphics anyway, but it's there for those special instances when someone hosts an image on a crappy server and then includes it in their signature.

    Hey, it happens.
I recommend you have a quick look at these options, anyway.
  • We can usually host you an avatar if you like, and even provide a little bit of FTP space if you need it for something (I'm more inclined to do this if you're proposing something for the Dept Of Public Works, for instance).
Either way, if you want something, ask me. The PM (private message) functions here at the CoT work really well.
