Anticipation

Postby Eolh » Mon Apr 23, 2007 4:15 pm

I just realized that we didn't really have a place to talk about upcoming games.

Anybody heard of this Left 4 Dead shit? Despite having an unfortunate name, it seems like the kinda game I've been wanting forever. Color me excited!

All the trailers seem to show is people running backwards and shooting..

It's hard to get excited about running backwards and shooting even though the premise seems awesome.

It's true, I haven't actually seen any clips of these amazing gameplay experiences people talk about with it, but I imagine that might be due to NDA issues or somesuch. I haven't seen any videos of more than one person fighting together either, however from all descriptions keeping all 4 people together is absolutely essential to survival.

The descriptions alone are getting me jazzed. I love co-op games. Even more I love co-op games where the point is expertise and mastery over enemies that have mostly static difficulty (meaning computer-controlled, I guess). The reason I don't like PVP, even group PVP, all that much is that the level of difficulty varies so excessively.

Co-op is all well and good, but not this half-arsed via Xbox Live co-op. Has to be on the same screen.

Seriously? I can't remember the last good co-op game I played that I was on the same screen...

Also, that's a little difficult to do on the PC.

The last same-screen co-op game I played that I really enjoyed was (no, not Halo) actually Street Fighter Alpha 2. There was a mode you could unlock that 1p play as Ryu and 2p play as Ken; you share a lifebar and super combo meter as you fight against Bison. I played that thing for hours with my uncle. You'd think 2v1 would be a huge advantage but that's really only the case when both people are good and they coordinate attacks. Bison could do one of his Psycho Crusher super combos and if it hit both people it was basically game over. One strategy we liked to try was to have one person do a crouching light attack to interfere with Bison's blocking, which opened him up to a joint combo. Or you could try to surround him and get like a 30 hit combo of light attacks since he could only block in one direction.

Holy crap, we're less than two months away from the release of Hellgate: London. Sweet.

EDIT: Bah! Nevermind, I was going by an old Release Date. I guess we're roughly 4 months away.

Yeah, that game looks pretty sweet. Kind of a futuristic Diablo.

If you didn't catch it, it's made by the guys who made Diablo and left Blizzard North to form their own studio (Flagship).

Only 4 months away? Really?

If it holds to that that would be pretty swell.

Right.

Templar class (warrior/paladin) looks good to me, though the caster and hunter classes seem cool too.

Gears of War's good fun split screen. Laying down covering fire for your buddy is great fun. Shame about your avatar being this lunk, but hey.

I thought this thread would give me the good news that the old NES game, Anticipation, was coming to the Virtual Console. The only thing that would make me buy a Wii more quickly would be news of Mario Paint.

In other news, I am sorely disappointed with this thread.

Left 4 Dead seems like it could be a lot of fun. The guy in the beanie comes off as a total douchebag, though. He reminds me of Brian Posehn. That girl is a twat, as well. But the game looks fun! Which system would you guys get it on? The 360 or the PC? I find I enjoy FPS games on the PC far more than I do on consoles, but if it involved massively upgrading my PC, I'd get it on the 360.

I am patiently waiting for BioShock. I have been for ages, it seems.

August cannot come quickly enough.

Spiritual successor to System Shock 2? Check.
Steampunk art-deco underwater colony? Check.
Tommy guns? Check.
Killing little girls to augment yourself? Check.

There needs to be come clock ticking away til it's release date, akin to the mayan calendar, the doom clock, atomic clock, or other such supernatural timepiece.

Seriously, Bioshock looks killer. I'm a little bit of a poser though, since I never played either of the System Shock games. Well that's not true, I played about 10 minutes of a pirated copy of System Shock 2 before it would lock up on XP. They should re-release it on Gametap or Xbox Live or something.

Me and a buddy of mine used to co-op through SS2 at least once every LAN party.

For the record, I was thinking about that game when I made the thread title.

Scariest cover ever.

Hopefully they'll put it out on the VC, but I don't think it'll have the same impact without the scary 80's glasses guy, who obviously thirsts for the human blood.

How many of those guys ended up in rehab I wonder? 40% is my guess.
