That image looks like an x-ray of teeth, or the caterpillar in Mario that gets pissed when you jump on it. Also, I am not sure about that tagline, that this is the first image of an individual molecule. A diamond is a single molecule.

If we're going to be pedantic, someone should probably point out that only a flawless diamond is a single molecule.

Smashing!

Now who has time and enthusiasm to calculate the kinetic energy of a proton travelling at 99% the speed of light?!

hint: there's a REALLY easy solution. and a fun math solution

Hint2: Newtonian Kinetic Energy = 1/2 mv^2 is not correct for objects moving at significant fractions of the speed of light!

proton mass = 938.27203 MeV/C^2

rest energy is E=MC^2

kinetic energy is energy above the rest energy as a function of its velocity

Relatavistic KE= (gama-1) mc^2 where gama is defined as : gama = 1/ sqrt(1-(v^2/c^2))

or as a function of velocity v/c = sqrt(1-(1/gama^2))
In fairness, we've been building 'ground zeros' near Iraqi mosques since March 2003.

3.5 tev, making the collisions done yesterday at an energy of 7 tev - and this isn't even the LHC's full potential, in a few years they'll be doing collisions at twice that energy! even so, whether the two protons are each travelling at 99.99% the speed of light or 99.99999% the speed of light when they collide they'll never go faster than the speed of light relative to each other (or any other frame of reference)!

Wasn't that a plot element of Angels & Demons?

don't you ever bring that trash up in this thread again.
