Gaming Threads

Postby Rob » Mon Apr 04, 2005 10:27 pm

Simple one for you this - there are basically three types of people on CoT at the moment;

1) People who are seriously engrossed in the WOW topic
2) People who are seriously not engrossed in the WOW topic
3) People who really don't give a shit one way or another about the WOW topic.

It has been suggested that we might have a new little forum area for gaming-specific threads. You know, like the WOW thread, whatcha playing etc. I'm not sure that this would be a good or a bad thing, so I'm throwing it up to you guys. Want a new forum area (ie, another thing like the Ministry, Dept Of Works etc) for gaming stuff? So you could have several different WOW threads without annoying the bejesus out of everyone else?

Or are we trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist?

Or do you just completely not give a shit either way?

Let me know. Either telepathically, or via the poll thing. The poll thing is probably more reliable, given the strange weather we're having here in Blighty right now.

I'll give it a couple of days and then pounce.

As I've mentioned I've toyed with setting up a seperate website elsewhere (or maybe within this domain depending on Rob's generosity) for our guild. I'd estimate that we only have roughly 20 unique players and probably only half of those would post anything, but it would probably eliminate some of the annoyance of non-WoWers having to constantly click on the thread to un-gold it, and would be less initimidating for our members who have never posted at this forum.

As it stands a "gaming forum" for gaming threads would mostly be for WoW anyway, and it maybe be better to just completely dissect us.

Fuck non-WOWers. They shall be assimilated. That said, I wouldn't mind breaking out the WOW thread into multiple threads. The one big one is really cumbersome and would benefit from being separated into several. Guild business, crafting, recommended mods, etc. If you think that is worth having a new area for, who am I to argue?

It's a good idea.

We could leave the main game topics in the CoT central forum and have an MMO forum instead of just WoW?

I am between 2 and 3. I am not engrossed with the thread, but I also don't care if the blasted thing is gold or not. I am smart enough to figure out there is probably conversation I don't care about in there, so I don't click it. It's not that difficult.
I think a gaming forum is unnecessary, but if the majority wants it, whatever.

I'm not in WoW, but I still read that thread (obviously by me making comments and questions). You guys are my friends and I'm interested what you are doing. I wouldn't want that thread to go away in any fashion being that it'd just get rid of everyone.

As far as moving it between ministry/pit/fuckmuppetry - do you really think that matters? If someone is obsessive enough to need 'ALL THE GOLD ICONS TURNED WHITE' then they will go to that thread and open it up anyway.

The only good solution (though I don't think it'd be all that easy to implement) would be to have an 'ignore thread' option - so that the thread won't turn when a new post is made.

I've made a few new threads recently like. They've gotten replies and conversation. The people who complain that 'this place is getting boring' or 'all posts are being sucked into one thread' are just pansies who aren't interesting enough to say anything worth talking back to.

One validating question.

Would it keep the WoW talk from overflowing into other topics?

My guess is no.

Thusly the idea is pointless from a Non-Player's perspective.

EDIT: However, I do like the idea of a gaming specific forum as Threads like "Whatcha Playin'" become too cumbersome to navigate. It'd be nice to be able to browse a forum for a game, as opposed to using the search function to see if anyone's posted on it. Might also encourage more new threads.

I too would like to see the ability to have multiple threads, which would suggest the solution I prefer would be to have a separate forum/area for those threads to go in. Searching back through page after page just to find the link to a mod someone suggested two weeks ago is a bit tiring. So I think I'd prefer an area where multiple WoW threads could be started without annoying people who don't play (however it won't bother me if such a thing does not come to fruition). And as Eolh said, such a place might be less intimidating to members of the guild who aren't existing forum members. If we can get them first posting in an MMO/WoW branch of CoT, perhaps they'd also eventually start posting in other topics here.

Oh boy, let's try to attract WoWers.

I do think a separate game forum would be worthwhile. it'd see more use than the ministry and public works i imagine.

I think attracting anyone at this point would be a good thing, honestly.

Yeah, my idea is not to create a seperate set of threads but to completely remove the WoW section. Basically to set up a wholly individual set of forums. This will allow for things like our handles being the same in-game and on the forums. Even if it isn't set up on Rob's hardware I think it's an idea I'm going to persue.

Yeah, it'd be a lot better than attracting the porn spambots we've been getting recently.

The latter tend to be more interesting than the former as conversationalists go.

Indeed, I try to lure new members over here when i can, but they tend to not stick around.

A separate online games forum might be cool. It wouldn't have to be limited to WoW, either. I know a few people here have XBox Live accounts (I will too, once I knuckle under and get Broadband.) It's not really necessary, but it might help us hook up in-game without having to churn through 100 pages of other stuff just to find someone's screen name.

Okay, well, interesting enough so far. And more divided than I'd expected.

The main reason I don't want to provide a entirely separate forum (ie, not just a new forum area but a new URL, new phpBB install, etc) is that it's already a total pain in the arse to keep this place up to date, what with all the interweb idiots who think it's funny to try and hack forums. Also, to be honest - I'm not interested in providing a base for a new forum that might thrive if nothing comes back to the CoT from it - I'd rather it be part of the CoT and hope that the newcomers might get more involved in the CoT 'proper', thus bringing some fresh blood to the overall shebang in time. (I hope that makes sense, I'm multitasking at the moment).

My views on this might change in the coming months though - my company is chasing a massive contract and if we're lucky (or unlucky) enough to win it, then one of the first things we'll be doing is to bring all of our web services in-house onto our own permanent web connection. At which point my ideal of having a server here, physically in my building, for the CoT (and whatever else) will be possible - and then my attitude to a lot of this will change.

Anyway, I'll let this stand a while longer, as we've only really had a dozen votes so far. I guess you can all see that my preference is to provide a new area within the CoT forum. But this isn't an exercise in lip-service - I'm only going to take any kind of action if I think it's actually going to improve things and that you guys are, for the most part, onboard with it.

By the way, I'm starting to twat around with my XBox live. So a new forum would be a good place for me to ask "what's your gamertag, and will you go easy on me?" :-)

I tried asking you on LJ, you bastard! But nooo, you didn't want to answer! Unless, of course, you've answered at some point today and I just haven't looked yet. In which case, you didn't actually read this.

I think a seperate game forum would be interesting, but maybe have it just for the MMO's, tabletop stuff, etc.? Although if someone comes up with their own game, it'd be nice to see it in the Dept. still. It could use the help.

My arm hurts. A lot.

I answered yesterday, you cretin! :-)

Honestly, some people!

But it would be good to collect some gamertags, if only to open them up in the friends window from time to time and shout abuse down the communicator at you all. :-)

I think that WoW may have mortally wounded CoT. Good thing I've got other forums and LJ to keep me occupied.
