I made this. It's meant to be a sleeping dragon critter. Just came out of an anagama kiln a couple of weeks ago:

Do.. do you have a kiln? I will be so jealous.
I've taken ceramic classes for years because I love it so much, but the professor despises me for some reason. I barely talk in there, so I am not sure when I got on her bad side. I need to get back in a class.

I don't personally have a kiln, but my girlfriend has two electrics at home, and she and several other people from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts run an anagama (wood fire, for those not in the know. Anagama actually translates into 'cave kiln'; it's a traditional Japanese firing method) twice a year. I help out with the wood fire one, and get space in the kiln when I want it in return for the help, even though I don't take any KIA classes.

I think I have some pics from the Kalamazoo kiln firing on the day I stopped by. Then I got a tick from traipsing through the woods of Michigan.

Yeah, ticks seem to be unusually heavy in those woods. At least it wasn't attached to your head, if I remember correctly...

I actually found it crawling up my leg while I was driving. Freaked me out a bit because I couldn't pull over to check for any more.

Quick, now's the time to exact your revenge! Make a fish, and say you thought he said "pisces".

Just a small bear that's being ridden by a demon (friendly demon, natch) that I whipped together in like 20 minutes out at the kiln site. Right now he's sitting at work, but I'll bring him home and snap some pics tomorrow night.

Other than that, I usually whip together a little kiln mascot out of wadding, but those things never hold together. Wadding is basically a mixture of clay and oatmeal that is shaped into small balls, pyramids, logs, etc., and that the pots are set on so that they don't meld with the kiln shelves (the kiln gets up around 2200 F at its peak). The wadding critters are pretty fragile and don't really last too terribly long.

Mwah ha ha... I should take one of my girlfriend's recent fish pieces and be all like LOOK AT HOW AWESOME I AM AT THIS. I wonder if she's put any shots of them up on DeviantArt yet...?

No, she hasn't. But you can see some of her stuff here:

Ha! I see you helped with one of the vases. The wire made of defective guitar strings. :-)

Heh, yep. She has enough funky guitar strings in her basement now to start her own business, if indeed there was a market for tarnished, bad strings.
