dogmeat has put an odd look on my face.

Today's word is: autotelism.
autotelism
n.
belief that a work of art is an end in itself or its own justification

Okay, can someone give me an example of a work of art that is autotelic and explain why? I don't think I understand the definition yet.

Addendum: Maybe like if you had a dog walk through paints then walk on a canvas. It doesn't really mean anything, the art is just that it was made that way. But what if you just smeared paints on a page, is that autotelic? I would argue no...the difference is that you know what you're doing, and you're doing it on purpose.

Perhaps autotelism isn't art without purpose, it is art without justification. Like, the shapes aren't intended to represent anything.

What if I had two paintings that were absolutely identical, but one of them was made by a dog walking through paints and the other was made by a guy with a paintbrush as a mimicry of a dog walking through paints?

I think it's just an excuse self-important people use to make crappy art.

However, I make crappy art because I like to.

I think it's like John Cage sitting on stage and playing a radio. Why did he do it? Art! Or maybe he had composer's block and did the musical equivalent of stealing someone else's report and putting it into a nicer binder.

Edit: I've got it!

Artist: "I have painted a picture of a clown who is crying."

Critic: "Why?"

Non-autoelitist response: "This symbolizes the ability of a human being to portray a bright and sunny exterior while secretly being miserable."

Autoelitist response: "Because it is art. If you do not understand that, then you are clearly a lesser person you... lesser person, you!"
"I'm gonna name it after Nancy!" "What, Pushover?" "Yes! Because that's what she does!"

Yeah, I don't know how you wouldn't notice that with just a cursory glance. Especially if you typed it.

a slightly easier task would be to ask for words with 4 or 5 'i's in them.

That's something I would expect from me. "Eh, that's too hard, let's do something easier. No, fuck that, I'm just gonna go jerk off."
